INDIANAPOLIS -- Dozens of cyclists took off from the Indiana Police and Fire Memorial Monday morning as part of “Cops Cycling for Survivors.”

This year’s group consists of 42 officers, friends of law enforcement and family members of fallen officers.

The group will ride for 13 days across the state, making stops at numerous locations, including Southport and Fort Wayne. They will visit with the families of two officers killed in the line of duty last year: Lieutenant Aaron Allan and Sergeant Joseph Cox Jr.

Organizers say the event honors fallen officers and recognizes the family members they left behind.

The family of Indiana State Police Trooper Daniel Barrett, who was killed in the line of duty in 2008, spoke during the opening ceremony of the event.

Trooper Barrett’s mother, father and sister shared how “Cops Cycling for Survivors” has impacted their lives and continues to impact the lives of other families.

The organization offers support to the families of fallen officers and carries on their memory by providing scholarships and other funds in their name.
