INDIANAPOLIS -- If you drive near Indiana Avenue and W. 10th Street, you may have noticed the Cancer Survivors Park is gone.
Built in 1995, the Cancer Survivors Park was funded by donations from the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation. The foundation redirected its funds to a different place to help those with cancer in October.
The Cancer Survivors Park has been marred by issues of disrepair over the years. In 2012, Indy Parks said the cost for fixes outpaced its funding. It was made as a tribute to those who survived cancer.
The R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation's donations will instead go toward the Little Red Door Cancer Agency, the state's oldest cancer agency. The agency helps provide screenings and information to uninsured people in Indiana.
“We understand that cancer patients need more than just medical treatments to get through their cancer journey,” said Vangie Rich, Executive Director of the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation. “We are confident that Little Red Door will do the best job of fulfilling those needs for cancer patients in Central Indiana through their programs, which provide a full-spectrum of services for patients and caregivers in the greater Indianapolis area.”
The actual land at Indiana Avenue and 10th Street belongs to Indy Parks and the Parks Foundation.
