INDIANAPOLIS -- Law enforcement members and their families honored those who have died while serving their communities in an annual ceremony Thursday evening.
"Grief is not something that goes away, but it's something you get through," said Sheri Bradway, the mother of Rod Bradway.
Rod Bradway, an IMPD officer, was killed in 2013. She read letters from her grandchildren who lost their father five years ago.
"Who knew 5 years ago today would be the last time you would drop us off and go to work, the last time I said I love you, the last time I gave you a hug," Sheri said.
The ceremony took place at the Indiana Law Enforcement and Firefighter Memorial. It's a sacred place for the families.
Thursday's memorial was raw for the community. Just days prior, Fort Wayne Police Department Officer David Tinsley was laid to rest.
"Indiana has lost more than 400 dedicated offers who took an oath to serve and protect our communities," said William Owensby, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police. "Tonight we stand united remembering those officers, and honoring those families."
Also recognized Thursday was Sgt. Joe Cox of the Allen County Sheriff's Department, Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts, and Indiana Conservation Officer Sgt. Ed Bollman.
Boone County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jacob Pickett, his wife, and their children were also recognized.
"As an administrator, as Jake's friend, we are just emotionally drained, but I can't imagine what the families are going through tonight and what they have gone through over the past several months since we lost Jake," Sheriff Mike Nielson said.
