INDIANAPOLIS -- It has been 60 years since downtown Indianapolis played host to Ray Charles as he performed in “The Fantabulous Rock N Roll Show of ‘57” in November of 1957 at Tomlinson Hall. Just months after that concert, Tomlinson Hall burned down but the adjacent City Market still stands.
1950’s rock ‘n roll is the theme of this year's MRKT BALL which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 7 - 11 p.m. The annual gala honors the history of the Market House and raises funds to ensure the preservation of downtown Indianapolis’ first and only public Market House.
“In the not too distant past historic preservation wasn’t a thing, and there were talks about tearing down landmarks such as the City Market. Today, however, we are able to celebrate this building’s 131st year because the community came together and made it clear they cared about this place. MRKT BALL is a continuation of that, an opportunity for people to show their support for the City Market and all we do for the Indy community,” said Joe Perin, Public Relations & Events Manager at The City Market. “All the proceeds of this event go to support building upkeep, operations, programming, and our creative placemaking efforts.”
MRKT BALL 2017 is a black-tie or a costume gala (poodle skirts and leather jackets are welcome). Guests can walk through the Historic Market House and enjoy live music from the 1950’s. There will be complementary drinks from Tomlinson Tap Room, food samples courtesy of Market House merchants, a photo booth, a bowling alley and other games, plus a historical exhibition of Market House treasures.
In gratitude for his lifetime of public service, especially his work on historical preservation as the 44th Mayor of Indianapolis, Senator Richard Lugar will be honored at MRKT BALL. Senator Lugar is begin recognized for his time as mayor of Indy, as he played a crucial role to saving and preserving City Market.
