Indianapolis could be ramping up residential permit parking penalties

INDIANAPOLIS -- If you park in an Indianapolis residential parking zone without a permit, there aren't a lot of repercussions, an Indianapolis City-County Councilor said. But a proposal to the council would add some teeth to some of the city's parking rules.

Councilor Jeff Miller has sponsored an ordinance that would add a fine to anybody who violates the city's residential parking codes. Miller said the current enforcement of the parking zones is "spotty," and it's unclear what, if any, formal penalty was ever established. Indianapolis police officers are even unclear on whether they can write tickets, Miller said.

The proposal would also formally establish residential permit parking zones in many city streets. Many of them technically already exist through an executive order more than a decade ago, but the proposal formalizes the following zones:

If the proposal passes, anybody parking in those areas must have a residential parking permit with proof of residency or a visitor parking pass. A violation could result in a $100 fine.

The proposal is scheduled to be considered -- and possibly voted on -- in the Public Works Committee on Thursday.
