INDIANAPOLIS -- A group of pastors revealed an ambitious plan to end gun violence in the streets of Indianapolis Monday afternoon by holding a “Cease Fire Weekend.”

The event will run Nov. 2 – 4 and will kick off with a job fair at the Martin Luther King Junior Community Center on Friday.

Then on Saturday, a gun buyback event will be held from Noon to 5 p.m. at the MLK Center.

Sunday, Nov. 4 will be called “Non-Violent Sunday.” Organizers are asking faith leaders to deliver a message of non-violence from their pulpits.

Organizers of the event encourage people to drop off their firearms – legal or illegal – with no questions asked. Participants will get a minimum $80 gift card, with larger amounts being paid out for higher caliber weapons.

Leaders stress the event is “not a trap” and no one will be arrested if they show up to drop off their guns.

“I think at the heart of it is we want to life consciousness,” said Dr. Wayne Moore with the Baptist Ministers Alliance. “We want people to become more responsible about the firearms they’re carrying and not make hasty decisions when they find themselves in situations or arguments or confrontations. We’re trying to come up with another solution instead of creating an atmosphere of homicide.”
