INDIANAPOLIS – IndyGo plans on using a municipal bond for more than $25 million to purchase 27 new hybrid buses. The plan was discussed and approved by a City-County Council Committee last week. The purchase of additional buses is part of IndyGo’s Five-Year Capital Plan, which was adopted in 2019.

The 40-foot buses will be manufactured by Gillig, which also manufactured many buses currently in IndyGo’s fleet. The buses and related equipment will cost $25.8 million.

The hybrid buses have a range of 480 miles, more than the estimated 370 miles of diesel buses or 150 miles of electric buses.

No new taxes will be imposed to pay for the new buses, IndyGo said last week.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the buses are 40 inches long, instead of 40 feet long. The buses are not that small.
