Marion County Jail inmate dies after becoming unresponsive

INDIANAPOLIS – An inmate at the Marion County Jail died Wednesday night.

Michael Burkhart, 49, became unresponsive Wednesday at about 7:29 p.m. He was pronounced deceased at 7:57 p.m.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The incident is also under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Marion County Forensic Services Agency.

Burkhart had been in custody since Aug. 10. He was being held on charges of battery by bodily waste on a public safety officer, resisting law enforcement, and criminal trespass after being arrested by Indiana State Police.
