INDIANAPOLIS -- The matriarch of the family behind Veal's Ice Tree died Saturday.
Mabel Veal died at age 98, just a couple weeks shy of her 99th birthday, according to an online obituary.
Mabel went to high school in Cadiz, Indiana, before marrying Vierl Veal in 1940. They had five children, many of whom worked on the famous ice tree on Indianapolis' southeast side beginning in 1961.

The Veals do not accept money or donations for the tree.
A couple weeks ago, Veal's Ice Tree posted on Facebook about Mabel's upcoming birthday. The family asked for birthday cards for her upcoming 90th birthday to honor and acknowledge her hard work for the ice tree.
Mabel never worked on the tree, but she's paid the electric bills "with happiness," the Facebook post said. She retired 9 years ago at age 90, but is failing fast, the post reads.
