INDIANAPOLIS -- The IPS Board of School Commissioners voted to close three city high schools Monday night.

Broad Ripple, Arlington and Northwest High Schools were voted to be shut down.

For the past five months, the board has heard and reviewed comments from more than 4,000 people through 26 engagement sessions with the community, students, teachers and staff.

IPS' plan includes selling Broad Ripple High School, as well as John Marshall Middle School.

But other schools, like Crispus Attucks, Shortridge, Arsenal Technical and George Washington, will remain open.

IPS says this plan would generate more than $7 million for the district. The school closures also help with the problem of declining enrollment of IPS high schools.

IPS has a total enrollment of just over 5,000 students, while the seven area high schools have the capacity of more than 14,000.

Specifically, Broad Ripple High School currently has 665 students and can hold 2,400.
