Indianapolis firefighters battle several fires Saturday, one fire leaves woman in serious condition

INDIANAPOLIS — Firefighters in Indianapolis battled several fires Saturday afternoon, one fire leaving a woman in serious condition.

Woman in serious condition
Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters were called around 12:10 p.m. to the 2900 block of Station Street on the report of a house fire, IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith said in an email.

A woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition after possibly inhaling smoke, Reith said. Five adults and three children were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by IFD and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department fire investigators, Reith said.

Abandoned church fire
The fire at an abandoned church was reported around 3 p.m. in the 1600 block of Cruft Street, northwest of East Troy and South Keystone avenues.

No one was inside the church when the Indianapolis Fire Department, according to the fire department. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Kitchen fire in Lawrence
Around the same time of the abandoned church fire, firefighters in Lawrence and Indianapolis were called to a kitchen fire in the 7400 block of East 49th Street.

Fire on East Street
Around 5 p.m., firefighters were called to Union 50, a restaurant in downtown Indianapolis for a fire.

Crews located a fire in an area that serves as the chimney and roofline for a brick pizza oven inside, Reith said.

No injuries were reported, Reith said. The Marion County Department of Public Health was called to the scene.

It's unknown at this time when the restaurant will be able to reopen.

House fire on North California Street
Firefighters found heavy fire and smoke showing when they arrived at a reported house fire around 3:50 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of North California Street, Reith said.

One firefighter suffered heat-related injuries and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment, Reith said.

Two adults and one child were displaced, Reith said. The fire caused "significant damage" and tore through the attic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by IFD and IMPD fire investigators.
