INDIANAPOLIS -- Three firefighters were injured Friday morning while fighting a vacant house fire on Indianapolis' west side.

The fire broke out around 6 a.m. in a house in the 200 block of Warman Ave.

One firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement, a second firefighter fell from the second floor into the basement, landing on the first firefighter.

A third firefighter was injured when he was struck in the head by a joist, a beam that supports a ceiling or floor. The joist hit him so hard it knocked off his helmet and mask, said Rita Reith, spokesperson for the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Reith said the three firefighters were taken to a hospital to be checked out, but they're expected to be OK.
