INDIANAPOLIS -- An inmate at the Marion County Jail died by suicide Sunday night.

The inmate, Joseph Defur, 32, was found unresponsive inside his cell just before 7 p.m. He was declared deceased at 7:13 p.m.

An investigation is being conducted by Indianapolis police, the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Coroner's Office.

Defur was being held in the jail on charges of possession of methamphetamine, as well as for warrants from Hancock County for theft and burglary. He was arrested on Aug. 11.

A second inmate attempted suicide early Monday morning, but was stopped by deputies.

A lawsuit was filed in January 2016 over suicides in the Marion County Jail, claiming the sheriff's department doesn't properly supervise inmates.
