Library offering free, personalized job search help

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis metro area's unemployment rate is doing better than the national average – but that still leaves more than 40,000 Indy residents without a job.

In June, the metro area had just over a 4 percent unemployment rate, while the national average was almost a full point higher.

To help address the issue, at least here at home, the Indianapolis Public Library is offering free, personalized job search assistant.

The TCU Foundation Job Center is open three days a week. The Center provides lab assistants to help you with job searching, writing a resume, practicing job interviews and narrowing down the process of applying for a position.

There's also free access to computers, the Internet, flash drives and anything else you might need in your job search.

"They don't have to answer any questions about who they are or what they are looking for," said Adult Program Specialist Susan Davis. "They get a chance to just sit down. They don't have to go through any screenings or sign up for any training. They can just come in, get the help they need without feeling pressured to give out any information about what they are here for."

The program has been around for five years and has served nearly 30,000 Central Indiana residents. The Central Library sees 10-20 people come in for help each session.

Funding for the program comes from the TCU Foundation, as well as the Library Foundation.
