MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- One person was hospitalized Monday morning after a crash in Madison County, Indiana.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m., near the intersection of State Road 13 and State Road 37, six miles south of Elwood.

Witnesses told the Madison County Sheriff's Department that a Dodge Stratus was driving erratically southbound near the SR 13/SR 37 split. The driver of a semi traveling north had to go off the road to avoid the crash.

The car then hit the rear wheels of the trailer a semi truck, pinning the driver inside, Sheriff Scott Mellinger said.

Emergency crews had to remove the roof of the Stratus to get the driver out. He was taken to an Indianapolis hospital in serious condition with multiple injuries. It is unknown what caused the car to serve on the road.

A third vehicle was damaged by debris from the crash.
