SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- An autopsy revealed that the bullet that struck and killed a Shelbyville man was fired by a police officer.
Officers with the Shelbyville Police Department were called to a house in the 1100 block of Fallway Court around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on a call of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they saw Steven Oliger, 64, on the back deck with a revolver. Two officers then yelled to a third about the gun. At that time, Oliger fired a shot from the revolver, police say. The third officer fired one shot from his .223 rifle toward Oliger's direction.
He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. Preliminary autopsy results released Thursday show the bullet that struck Oliger was a .223 caliber round fired from the rifle of a Shelbyville police officer.
Indiana State Police say the Shelbyville officer was justified in shooting at the man, considering the circumstances.
