INDIANAPOLIS -- Of the 44 Marsh stores in danger of closing, 26 of them were purchased in a bankruptcy auction.

That leaves 18 Marsh stores that will close in early July, according to a spokesperson for Marsh.

Most of the ones that were bought were the higher-profile stores or the only major supermarket in town, like the Marsh stores in downtown Indy or in Tipton, Indiana, respectively.

In early May, Marsh officials filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and said the 44 locations could close if the company did not find a buyer. In the last several months, many stores closed around central Indiana, which the company said was due to poor performance and increased competition.

The auction was for bidders who were considered qualified to operate assets of the company.

The Marsh spokesperson said liquidation sales at the Marsh stores not being purchased has begun and will last until inventory is gone, likely early July.
