LAWRENCE, Ind. -- A former middle school custodian returned to his workplace to burglarize it early Monday morning, police say.
Officers were checking around Belzer Middle School in Lawrence when they noticed one of the doors had been propped open.
According to the officers, two men who walked out of the west side of the school were later identified as Troy Smith, 21, of Indianapolis, and Tyler Jobe, 22, of Indianapolis.
MSD of Lawrence Township confirmed that Smith had worked as a custodian at Belzer Middle School in August, but he stopped showing up for work in October, and was no longer employed by the school district.
Officers say they discovered that Smith had two keys to the school.
Detectives say Smith admitted to entering the school on three separate occasions, with the keys he had been given when he was employed there, to steal cash.
Jobe also admitted that he was with Smith at the school on at least two occasions and got cash for going with Smith, according to detectives.
Both men face a preliminary charge of burglary.
