MARION, Ind. -- An armed robbery suspect was found dead in the woods after holding up a McDonald's and fleeing from the restaurant, injuring a K-9 police dog in the process.

The suspect walked into the McDonald's in the 2000 block of S. Western Avenue shortly before 10 p.m Thursday and announced a hold up.

Marion police say he was menacing the employees and customers with a semi-automatic handgun.

A customer called 911 from within the store, alerting Marion police to the situation. When officers arrived, the suspect was still in the restaurant, but he fled when he saw them.

The arriving officers turned K-9 Geronimo loose on the suspect, chasing him behind the McDonald's into the woods. The suspect fired several shots back at the dog, injuring the K-9. Police have not disclosed the nature of the dog's injuries, but said he will make a full recovery and return to work in two weeks.

Police said more shots were fired, and officers set up a perimeter. After some time of searching for the suspect, they located him deceased.

An autopsy is being performed to determine exact cause of death, but it appears the suspect took his own life.

Indiana State Police was brought in to assist the investigation, which is custom in Marion for any fatal shooting.
