COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Fourteen people were displaced from a Columbus apartment complex Monday evening when a massive fire broke out in the building.

The Columbus Fire Department was called to the Fox Pointe Commons apartments on 4700 Creekside Way around 7:30 p.m. Monday.

They arrived to find heavy flames and smoke pouring from the building.

Fourteen occupants of the eight-unit building had already been evacuated.

As the fire and smoke spread through the building's attic, the roof collapsed on two units. Four apartments sustained significant fire damage, and two sustained significant smoke and water damage.

One injury was reported as a result of the fire, but was not believed to be life-threatening.

Crews said the fire started when somebody threw a cigarette away in a plastic receptacle near a wall to the apartment.
