INDIANAPOLIS — An off-duty Indiana State Police detective was critically injured in a motorcycle crash Saturday morning in Indianapolis.

Indiana State Police troopers and emergency personnel were called around 8:30 a.m. to Interstate 465, just south of Interstate 69, on the report of a crash, ISP Sgt. John Perrine said in a press release. When they arrived, they found Detective Phillip (Andy) Byers, 49, lying on the interstate. He is a 24 year veteran.

Investigators believe Byers was traveling southbound and coming upon slower traffic, when a car beside him collided with him and he crashed into the back of a semi-trailer.

He was wearing his helmet at the of the crash and was riding his personally owned motorcycle, Perrine said.

Byers is a detective with the ISP Pendleton District.

Intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Perrine said. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have seen the crash or has information on it is asked to call police at 317-899-8577.
