PENDLETON, Ind. -- An inmate from the Pendleton Correctional Facility died at St. Vincent's Anderson Regional Hospital Monday.

Correctional officers say at 1:15 p.m., Justin Addler, 32, barricaded himself in his cell with a weapon. He refused all orders to release the weapon.

Officials haven't said what kind of weapon it was.

The Cell Extraction Team was called, and Addler voluntarily submitted to restraints. He was moved to the Health Care Center where he received medical treatment.

Officials also haven't said what his injuries were.

He was then moved to a hospital cell, and staff noticed him unresponsive. Officials say they immediately began life-saving procedures and an ambulance was called, which took Addler to St. Vincent.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:17 p.m.

Addler was sentenced in Tippecanoe County for dealing in cocaine and carrying without a license. He had a projected release date of April 6, 2026.

The incident is under investigation by the facility's information and intelligence office, the Indiana State Police and the Madison County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy and toxicology testing will be conducted.
