INDIANAPOLIS -- The man found shot to death Monday morning on Indianapolis' northeast side is the son of a community activist and former Jefferson Award winner.

Family of 40-year-old Senteayehou Henry say he was discovered dead in a home in the 3700 block of Chester Avenue around 6 a.m. by his girlfriend.

Henry's girlfriend, who lives at the house with him, told investigators she had been out of town and returned home to find him just inside the door.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department haven't released exactly when the shooting took place, nor did they have a definitive motive or suspects involved in the shooting.

Family who identified the victim say he is the son of Aster Bekele, a retired chemist from Eli Lilly and the current Executive Director at the Felege Hiywot Center in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, a faith-based center that serves the urban youth of Indianapolis, teaching science and nature through self-sufficient gardening and community service.

She was given a Jefferson Award in 2014 for her devotion and expertise to championing education and supporting youth.

Bekele was on the scene of the discovery this morning, too distraught to discuss her son's death.

A cousin of Henry's told RTV6 that Bekele is a woman who works to help save others' children, and now someone took the life of her son.

Henry's brother, Darye, is one of the pastors at Trinity Baptist Church. Family told RTV6 Senteayehou went to listen to his brother preach Sunday.
