INDIANAPOLIS -- One woman died Monday morning as a result of a crash on Indy's northwest side.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m., in the 8900 block of West 56th Street.

Police found two cars with significant damage. Firefighters had to work to free both trapped drivers.

The driver of a blue Kia was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where she later died. The other person was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to serious.

Investigators believe the Kia crossed the center line and collided head-on with a silver Ford car.

There were no visible signs of impairment, but the surviving driver will be subject to a standard blood draw.

The road was closed for about 3 hours, but has since reopened.

Police haven't released the identities of the victims
