INDIANAPOLIS -- A 20-year-old college sophomore was killed Thursday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 65.

The crash happened around 1 a.m., near the 21st Street exit of the southbound lanes of I-65.

Police say a Nissan sedan, driven by Eric Petruzzi, 20, Carmel, was headed northbound in the southbound lanes of I-65 when it crashed into a semi truck.

The semi sheared the car in half, then dragged it nearly 100 yards.

Petruzzi was pronounced dead at the scene. He attended Marian University and was a member of the baseball team.

Daniel J. Elsener, the president of Marian University released a statement on Petruzzi's death:

“The Marian University community was deeply saddened to learn that one of our students, Eric Petruzzi, was tragically killed in a car crash early this morning. Eric was a sophomore majoring in business management and a member of the Knights baseball team. Our most heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Eric’s family and friends, as well as his coaches and professors. The university is providing grief counseling on campus to all students, staff and faculty.”

There were two people in the semi. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The semi belongs to Premiere Transportation, based out of Atlanta.

Police are still trying to determine why Petruzzi was going the wrong way on I-65.
