INDIANAPOLIS -- One person was hospitalized Friday morning after the vehicle they were driving was hit by a train on Indianapolis' east side.

The crash happened around 1 a.m., near the intersection of Sherman Drive and Massachusetts Avenue.

Police say the driver was impatient and drove around the stop arm and was hit by a westbound CSX train.

The car was shoved into a fence about 75 yards away from the intersection. The driver was unconscious at first, but later came to and was taken to Eskenazi Health in serious condition.

A police spokesperson said it's unknown if alcohol was a factor.
