INDIANAPOLIS -- Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man who they believe robbed an 83-year-old retired police officer.

On Sept. 6, somebody knocked on the victim's door in the 6200 block of Brookville Road, asking for help with a flat tire. When the victim answered, the suspect entered the house, shoved the man down. The suspect ripped his back pocket off, taking his checkbook.

The victim was injured, but didn't need immediate medical attention.

Through Facebook and witness statements, police identified James Bayles, 28, as a suspect.

Police arrested Bayles Tuesday night during a stop. Police also found heroin and drug paraphernalia.

Bayles was preliminarily charged with robbery and possession of a narcotic drug.

IMPD recommends people talk to their elderly loved ones and tell them to never allow people they don't know into their houses.
