WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University announced plans on Thursday to acquire Kaplan University and its 15 campuses across the United States.
All 32,000 students and 3,000 employees will transition to the new university. The new name, which will include Purdue, has not been announced.
No state money will be used in the acquisition.
There is no upfront purchase price for Purdue, but the university will enter into a long-term transition agreement, with a buyout option after six years.
“I’ve always had great respect for Gov. Daniels, and I’m excited by this opportunity for a world-class university to expand its reach and help educate adult learners by acquiring a strong for-profit college," Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "This is a first, and if successful, could help create a new model for what it means to be a land-grant institution.”
