INDIANAPOLIS — Three cats were rescued and four more are missing following a house fire Wednesday on the city's east side.

The Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a fire at 51 N. Grant Ave. at 9:10 a.m. The house's occupants, a 57-year-old man and 58-year-old woman, escaped the blaze before firefighters arrived.

The man told firefighters they were using a gas-powered generator inside the home and had multiple extension cords with multiple appliances plugged into it. He said he smelled smoke and found fire inside the walls under the stairwell near the generator.

Three cats received oxygen therapy and were transported to Noah's Animal Hospital on Stop 11 Road as part of IFD and Noah's Domestic Animal Rescue Treatment partnership, while the whereabouts of four other cats remain unknown.

The report from IFD said Indianapolis Animal Care Services removed seven additional cats from the house on Tuesday.
