TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. -- A man jumped from a speeding car while fleeing from police Monday morning in Tippecanoe County, suffering life-threatening injuries.
The incident started on I-65, as Indiana State Police Trooper Daniel Connolly was on patrol near the SR 25 exit. He noticed a black 2008 Volkswagen commit a traffic violation, then exit to SR 25 northbound. The trooper followed him, then turned on his emergency lights, according to police.
Suddenly, the Volkswagen sped up to more than 70 mph, and the driver climbed out of the window.
Connelly stopped and tried to administer first aid, but the man, later identfied as Justin Redmon, 32, became very combative, police say. The trooper requested backup to help until paramedics came to the scene.
Police are not sure why the man jumped from the vehicle, but say drugs or alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash. He was taken to Methodist Hospital with life-threatening injuries. After the man jumped out of the car, it continued for about a quarter of a mile before stopping in the median.
