INDIANAPOLIS -- Fireworks are a Fourth of July staple, but you need to be careful if you're going to set them off at home.

Last year, nearly 100 Hoosiers ended up in the emergency room on the Fourth and there were around 11,000 fireworks injuries nationwide.

Doctors say the most common injuries are burns, especially to the fingers, hands and arms.

Here are some safety reminders if you plan on your own fireworks show at home:

  • Have a water bucket close by for hot fireworks and sparklers when you're done using them
  • Wear eye protection
  • Set off fireworks in an open area
  • If there are kids around, make sure to have adult supervision
  • Don't drink before lighting fireworks. Most of the injuries happen to people while they are intoxicated
