INDIANAPOLIS -- Pope Francis named the Bishop of Evansville as the next archbishop for Indianapolis.
Charles C. Thompson, 56, was announced to be the Archdiocese of Indianapolis' new archbishop at 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
Thompson is currently the Bishop of Evansville, Indiana. He was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Louisville in 1987.
He is officially archbishop-elect until July 28, when he will be officially installed. He will also receive the Pallium, the insignia of his role as Metropolitan of the Indiana Province.
Indianapolis has been without an archbishop since last fall when Archbishop Joseph Tobin was made a cardinal and sent to lead Catholics in Newark, New Jersey.
Thompson was officially introduced at a press conference at 10 a.m.
