Whole Foods recalling cheese for contamination

Whole Foods is recalling some of its cheese from across the country due to possible contamination.

The company is recalling Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese after some of the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall affects products with the PLU numbers beginning in “293308” and Sell By dates of 1-20-2016 through 3-21-2016.

It was sold in cheese cases in Whole Foods stores nationwide. There are two in central Indiana – one on 86th Street, just west of Keystone Avenue, and one in Carmel near 146th Street and U.S. 31.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause the infection Listeriosis. It is sometimes fatal in young children

The testing of the cheese was done by the state of Iowa. The company is collaborating with the FDA and the state of Iowa to determine the cause.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.
