INDIANAPOLIS -- U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be in Indianapolis Monday to meet with U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler, the FBI and the Ten Point Coalition.
Sessions was invited by Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, his office said.
The national head of the Ten Point Coalition will also be in Indianapolis, said Rev. Charles Harrison.
"We have learned from Boston, and it was successful in Boston, and I think we've done a good job of significantly reducing the violence. Last year 85 percent reduction in murders in the 46218 zip code...just remarkable," said Harrison.
Sessions will meet with the Ten Point Coalition about their model for reducing youth gun violence in Indianapolis neighborhoods.
He will deliver remarks on community safety and efforts to combat violent crime.
"We need to empower our people and our neighbors - whatever race or color in every community in Indianapolis," said Carleen Carter, member of the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association, an area where the Ten Point Coalition patrols.
The state has $500,000 in grants to dispense to grassroots crime fighting campaigns. Some people are concerned that Sessions' plans to come to Indianapolis aren't genuine, but Harrison said he isn't worried about those opinions.
"How do we make these neighborhoods safer, how do we keep our kids out of the grave - then i'm willing to have a conversation about that. Just because they don't like who we're meeting with, that doesn't mean a whole lot to us," he said.
A community protest against Sessions' visit, hosted by several church pastors, is planned for Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. at Purpose of Life Ministries.
The Ten Point Coalition has plans to expand to 10 other Indiana cities including Kokomo, Muncie, Fort Wayne and Gary.
