GREENWOOD — A driver died after being rescued from a submerged car in a pond Saturday afternoon in Greenwood, according to fire officials.

Emergency personnel were called to the incident around 3:15 p.m. near State Road 135 and Main Street.

The driver was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition, White River Township Fire Department Chief Jeremy Pell said. The driver was in the water for about an hour before being rescued.

He later died, according to a tweet from the Indianapolis Fire Department. The department's dive team was requested to help at the scene.

Bystanders were trying to help get the driver out of the submerged car when they arrived, Pell said.

"It's really a remarkable show of concern for humankind," Pell said. "When I get the chance to see them, I'm going to express to them how grateful I am that they are willing to take a risk like that. At the same time, that is a very, very serious risk."

He said he is glad they called 911 quickly.

Several fire departments and law enforcement agencies were on the scene.

The driver's identity hasn't been released.
