CARMEL — A man has died after he pointed a weapon at police and was shot by at least one Carmel Police Department officer Sunday afternoon, according to police.
Carmel Police Department officers were called around noon after a man was threatening to harm himself, CPD Lt. Timothy Byrne said. As officers were arriving at the home in the 400 block of West Main Street, the man was firing shots out of the house.
A Carmel police car and other vehicles were struck by gunfire, Byrne said.
The suspect, Keith Scales, 60, eventually came out of the house, pointed a high-powered rifle at officers, and was struck by gunfire from at least one Carmel police officer, Byrne said. He was taken to a local hospital and later died.
It's not clear at this time how many officers fired their weapons, but Bryne said those officers will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, which is a standard procedure.
The Fishers Police Department is investigating the incident.
All Carmel police officers wear body cameras, but it's not clear if all of the officers were recording during the incident, Bryne said.
