CHICAGO — One of the people killed in a shooting at a Chicago hospital was an Indiana resident set to return to the state for Thanksgiving, ABC7 in Chicago reported.
The shooting happened Monday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. The people killed were identified as Dr. Tamara O'Neal, suspect Juan Lopez, Chicago police officer Samuel Jimenez, and pharmaceutical assistant Dayna Less.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the shooting began in the parking lot outside the hospital as part of a domestic dispute between O'Neal and Lopez. Relatives said O'Neal had been set to marry Lopez in October, but called off the wedding in September, according to ABC7.
After the initial shooting, police say Lopez ran into the hospital and kept shooting, hitting the two other victims. Lopez also died, though it is unclear whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Less, 25, was a first-year pharmaceutical resident. She was a graduate of Purdue University and was planning to go home to Indiana for Thanksgiving with her family. She was planning on getting married in Indiana in 2019, ABC7 reported.
O'Neal was also a Purdue alumna, graduating in 2002. She was a native of LaPorte, Indiana.
