BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A former Indianapolis Colts player abruptly retired from his 2018 team. And we mean very abruptly.

Cornerback Vontae Davis played the first half for the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday, went into halftime, and never came back out to play the second half. Davis removed himself from the game and retired at halftime.

"But today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn't be out there anymore," Davis said in a statement.

Davis' former Buffalo teammate, linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, told reporters after the game what Davis did is "disrespectful."

"I never have seen that," Alexander said, via ESPN. "Pop Warner, high school, pros. Never heard of it. Never seen it. It's just completely disrespectful to his teammates. ... He didn't say nothing to nobody. I found out going into the second half of the game. They said he's not coming out, he retired. That's it."

Davis spent five full years in Indianapolis before the team released him five games into the 2017 season. He started 71 games for the Colts, recording 13 interceptions and making two Pro Bowls.

In his statement, Davis said he meant no disrespect to his teammates.

"But I hold myself to a high standard," he wrote. "Mentally, I always expect myself to play at a high level. But physically, I know today that isn't possible and I had an honest moment with myself. While I was on the field, I just didn't feel right, and I told the coaches, 'I'm not feeling like myself.'
