INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts released punter Jeff Locke on Monday, giving the punter job to rookie Rigoberto Sanchez.
The competition for the team's punter began when Pat McAfee abruptly retired from football in Feb. 2 to join Barstool Sports.
The Colts signed Locke to a two-year contract, with $1.25 million guaranteed about a month later.
Locke was apparently outplayed by Sanchez, an undrafted free agent from the University of Hawaii.
In three games, Sanchez averaged 47.2 yards per punt, and pinned opponents inside their 20-yard-line three times.
Locke had similar numbers. He averaged 43.5 yards per punt and pinned opponents back three times.
While Sanchez shows positional promise on special teams, it's unlikely he can match McAfee's humor or his philanthropy in the Indianapolis area.
