INDIANAPOLIS -- Starting in October 2017, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grandstands will be smoke-free, IMS officials announced Wednesday.

IMS first offered smoke-free family grandstands for Carb Day 2016. The same options will be available for the 2017 Grand Prix, Carb Day and Brickyard 400. Smoking will still be allowed at this year's Indianapolis 500.

Beginning with the Red Bull Air Race in October, there will be no grandstand smoking allowed at any IMS event.

Anybody wanting to smoke will have to do so at least 20 feet away from buildings. Smoking will still be allowed in the IMS infield.

"In recent years, our fans have consistently asked us to provide a smoke-free experience in the grandstands," IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. "This is especially true among families bringing younger children to the track. I’m pleased we’re making this move and look forward to working with our operational team, fans and partners to implement these changes.”

Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Jerome M. Adams commended the Speedway for the decision.

"The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the premier attractions in Indiana, and it’s exciting to see it taking a public stand for smoke-free environments," he said. "I can’t think of a more visible endorsement of better health for Hoosiers and those who visit our state.”
