INDIANAPOLIS -- Modern Indianapolis 500s have lots of alcohol, sun and parties. But what about the ones of the past? Well, they had lots of alcohol, sun and parties.
Let's take a look through what some remember (but many don't) of Indy 500s of years gone by.
Note: Viewer discretion is advised:
This first video is from 1985-1987, "Inside the Third Turn." According to the video description, these were the "third turn antics of a group of social misfits."
You can see people dancing in front of the fence, some gnarly sunburns and many, many, many male body competitions.
Our next video is a little more current -- the 2012 Coke Lot. These videos were going to be chronological, but the first frame is a large fire in the middle of the grass. So it has to be next. Another highlight: breaking a bottle against a table while another person throws a dumpster into a pile of trash?
And because it's the Indy 500, this video's partygoers chanted "USA! USA!" while that fire was being put out.
For the next video, let's bring it back to the past. The 1983 Indy 500 "raw from the camera." The highlight? Around 10 minutes in, you'll see a man "resting" in mud before getting up and gleefully throwing it at a man standing nearby.
Let's return to the present. In our last video, one YouTube user has a GoPro strapped to him all day, so we get a firsthand view of tailgating in the Coke Lot, then wandering over to the Snake Pit for more partying. The highlights? Jumping over a pile of burning furniture and taking a swig of rum (er... hopefully rum) from a stranger.
If you do go to the Indy 500 for the parties, please remember to drink some water and bring some sunscreen.
