INDIANAPOLIS -- Where else, other than Indianapolis, can a IndyCar driver race a stunt plane head-to-head?
That's exactly what Alexander Rossi, the winner of the 2016 Indy 500, and Kirby Chambliss, two-time Red Bull Air Race World Champion, did at Indianapolis Motor Speedway did in a video posted Wednesday.
The race was in anticipation of the Red Bull Air Race taking place Oct. 1 and 2 at IMS.
"It felt a little bit like chicken, for sure," Rossi said. "I think I won."
After the race, they took turns in the passenger seat of the other's machine.
First, Chambliss took a ride around IMS with Rossi driving.
"The first time he goes into Turn 1 at full speed will be a little bit eye-opening, but he'll be fine," Rossi said.
Kirby gave two-thumbs-up as he went by the IMS Pagoda in Rossi's car.
"The thing is the duration," Chambliss said afterward. "It's so intense for a long time. My stuff is really intense, but it's like 'Yeah, OK, I'm done.' Yours takes a long time."
"Yeah, 500 miles goes for a while," Rossi deadpanned.
Then it was Rossi's turn to be a passenger.
"Here we go," Chambliss said, as he started rolling the plane side-over-side.
You can hear the excitement in Chambliss' voice as he tells Rossi what he's doing.
"Now we're going end-over-end," he said. "Isn't that cool?"
After a few more flips and spins, they land.
"At the beginning, you don't know what to expect," Rossi said. "You're kind of going in tripping out a little bit. But then once you do a one or two things, you know it's going to be OK. I wish I could've done it for another hour."
