JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. -- I-65 southbound in Jackson County reopened Wednesday night following a crash involving multiple semis and a chemical fire.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 43 and caused a massive chemical spill from one of the trucks.

Indiana State Police later closed all lanes of traffic and evacuated homes within a half-mile of the crash because of an "explosion risk," according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

Indiana State Police have not said what chemical was leaking from the truck.

The crash happened when one of the semis rear-ended the another, causing a chain reaction crash that involved three semis altogether.

One driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

INDOT crews opened both southbound lanes of I-65 around 9 p.m. after milling away surface pavement damaged by the chemical fire.
