INDIANAPOLIS -- Like it or not, winter weather will be here soon.

As the temperatures start to drop, there are a few important things to remember about preparing your car and your house for the colder temperatures.

The models indicate Indianapolis will see above average snowfall this season. The average snowfall is about 25 inches, so expect somewhere between 25-30 inches of snow.

Winterize your vehicle:

  • Replace your wiper blades
  • Check tire pressure
  • Check tread and depth on tires
  • Keep a blanket and extra clothing in the car, as well as a first aid kit, a flashlight and cat litter or sand

Remember that the first areas to become slick when it snows are bridges and overpasses, so slow down and keep more space between you and other cars on the road.

Prepare your home

  • Insulate pipes
  • Caulk doors and windows
  • Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work

The American Red Cross has more details hereon preventing frozen pipes and thawing them if necessary.
