INDIANAPOLIS -- How did we do?
It’s a question our meteorologists ask themselves after every weather event – big or small – that impacts our viewers.
Our goal is to keep you updated, safe and prepared for any situation that comes, but sometimes the weather is a very tricky thing to track.
“My job is to make sure we are not surprised by anything,” said RTV6 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Gregory. “I bet you were surprised this morning.”
Although Gregory sounded the alarm during the 11 p.m. news on Tuesday, it was probably too late to get your attention and many of you were already in bed.
Overnight, temperatures dropped into the 20s and the wet ground dried up, leading to ice on all untreated roads and sidewalks.
“I always wish that merely recognizing roads would be slick could prevent accidents,” said Gregory. “It doesn't work that way.”

Taking a look at Wednesday morning’s mess and looking at how we can keep you better informed in the future, here’s how Gregory graded his work.
TIMING: C+
The forecast transition from rain to flurries and very light snow Tuesday afternoon into early evening worked well. However, the precipitation was much slower to leave than forecast. Originally expected to end Tuesday evening, the light precipitation continued through the overnight hours.
PRECIPITATION: C
Rain, flurries and very light snow were all expected. The surprise was the change back to freezing drizzle.
IMPACT: C
Although the precipitation was light, the alarm bells should have been sounded earlier about the potential impact on untreated roads. Salt was the key to the morning commute. Unsalted roads were an icy mess, while salted streets were in much better shape. I should have been more aggressive in anticipating the major implications on the morning drive and schools.
