INDIANAPOLIS — On Monday, Indiana State Police troopers investigated a shooting on I-70 eastbound near Post Road in Indianapolis.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine, one person died inside a vehicle.
The person, identified by ISP as 30-year-old Eli Hickerson of Carthage, Indiana, was shot while riding as a passenger in a vehicle traveling on I-70. They were shot by a person in a box truck.
During their run, troopers received word that Hickerson was being driven from the scene of the shooting to a medical facility near I-70 and Mt. Comfort Road in Hancock County. Upon arrival, medical personnel from the facility came outside and attempted life-saving measures on the victim, but the male was pronounced deceased a short time after arrival.
A preliminary investigation by state police detectives determined Hickerson was a passenger in a red Ford Focus that was traveling eastbound on I-70 near Post Road. Shots were allegedly fired by the driver of a white box truck at the Ford Focus, striking Hickerson at least one time.
It is believed this began as a road rage incident.
At about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, detectives arrested a 22-year-old Indianapolis man.
I"This arrest is a result of an extraordinary effort by our detectives, troopers and other assisting police agencies who have worked tirelessly through the night," ISP Lieutenant Josh Watson said. "They diligently investigated the crime scene, gathered intelligence information and followed each lead meticulously, resulting in the arrest of the person we believe is responsible for this senseless act."
This case is the 37th interstate shooting that troopers and detectives from the Indianapolis District have investigated so far in 2022, according to ISP. 65 interstate shootings were investigated by ISP in the Indianapolis area in 2021.
