INDIANAPOLIS — A 9-year-old girl was injured in a shooting early Tuesday at a home on the city's northwest side, police say.
Officers found the girl wounded while responding about 6 a.m. to the 5300 block of Winterberry Drive, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
The girl was transported to a local hospital and with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.
"Preliminarily, detectives learned the victim was in bed when shots were fired into the residence. Detectives do not believe this apartment was the intended target," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley wrote in an email.
Police haven't released additional details.
IMPD asked anyone with more information to call detectives at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477 (TIPS).
Editor's note: Police initially said the victim is a teenager but later clarified she is nine years old.
