INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is asking citizens to avoid the area around the 5500 block of Dollar Hide N. Drive on the southwest side as they investigate an incident that included a person firing a weapon at officers.
According to Public Information Officer William Young, officers responded to the location for a welfare check around 4 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers witnessed a man with a firearm outside of a residence in the area.
According to Young, there were shots fired from the adult male at or near officers. No officers were injured as they retreated from the shooter. None of the officers fired their weapons.
At least one IMPD patrol car was struck by the gunfire.
The location is near the intersection of S. High School Road and Thompson Road.
As of 5:45 p.m., the suspected shooter was safely taken into custody, according to IMPD.
Police obtained and executed a search warrant for the home and seized several firearms from inside.
IMPD says its officers' body cameras were activated during their response.
On Aug. 30, Ryan Ridner, 33, of Indianapolis was charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count each of criminal reckless and resisting law enforcement.
Ridner is scheduled for an initial hearing Sept. 1 at Marion Superior Court.
"This just speaks to the dangers that officers face day in and day out," Young said. "When you put on the uniform and go to work you never know if you're going to be shot at. It is a dangerous — dangerous job. I have to applaud our officers that come out and do it every day."
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 317-327-3475.
