ZIONSVILLE — A 29-year-old man has been arrested after he barricaded himself inside a Zionsville house for nearly eight hours on Wednesday.
Wesley Garst, a public information officer for the Boone County Sheriff's Department, said the man was arrested without injury to himself, police or the public.
The Boone County Communications Center received a call just before 5 a.m. from a person who reported that a man was walking through the neighborhood with a firearm near Karen Drive and Lake View Drive.
The caller said the man pointed the firearm at them before police arrived.
Garst said the man went into a family member’s house. His family left the home and police established a perimeter while they attempted to communicate with him.
Neighborhood residents were told to stay indoors and keep their doors locked after the man barricaded himself inside the house.
Garst said the man was known to law enforcement due to previous mental health issues.
Over the course of several hours, police used an unmanned robot to enter the house. Garst said gas projectiles were launched into the house to try to get the man to leave peacefully.
At one point, the man left the house with a firearm in his hand and immediately went back inside, Garst said. Pepper balls and more gas projectiles were then fired into the house.
Police also flew a drone in the house to figure out where the man's location.
Garst said the man surrendered to police in an update sent at 1:20 p.m.
WRTV does not name suspects who have not been charged by prosecutors.
