INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says a male suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning.
IMPD officer Samone Burris says around 10 a.m., officers responded to the 500 block of S. Holt Road on the city's west side for a domestic disturbance with a weapon call.
In an update just after 3 p.m., IMPD Sgt. Genae Cook said a woman outside told officers her roommate was being held hostage inside a bedroom by her boyfriend who had a gun. Police later said it was the roommate's ex-boyfriend.
Cook says officers went inside and tried to de-escalate the situation, The SWAT team also responded and negotiations continued, according to police.
"At a certain point, a gunshot was heard from inside the bedroom. To protect the safety of the hostage, SWAT team members then immediately entered the bedroom where they engaged the suspect," Cook said. "At least four officers then fired their department-issued weapons, striking the suspect. Simultaneously, they then grabbed the hostage and removed her from the situation and took her to a safe location."
Police say SWAT team medics pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. On Monday, the Marion County Coroner's Office said he had been identified as Thomas Talley, 40.
Cook says a gun, knife and machete were later found in the bedroom.

"The officers in this area have frequently been called out to this location, whether it's disturbance or other type of investigations, so they are familiar with this residence."
No officers were injured in the incident.
Cook says all four officers who fired their weapons were wearing body cameras that were activated. They have been placed on administrative duty with pay, which is standard IMPD protocol.
The suspect's identity has not been released.

Kevin Taylor has lived in the neighborhood for 10 years. He tells WRTV he saw a lot of cops surrounding a house before seeing tear gas. He says authorities were on scene for about three hours.
"Does this come as a shock to you?" asked WRTV's Nikki DeMentri.
"No, not really, no. This is the west side, it's always like this it seems like anymore," Taylor said.
